Quality Improvement: Pediatric Food Insecurity Screening

Date

February 2022 - Present

Project type

Quality Improvement Project

Location

Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt

Under the mentorship of Dr. Cristin Fritz in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, I implemented an audit and feedback system for food insecurity screening at Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital. This led to an increase in pediatric inpatient food insecurity screening rate from 25% to 48% and identification of disparities in screening rates by preferred language.

I continued working with the multidisciplinary food insecurity screening team to perform data management and draft the methods and results sections of a quality improvement manuscript describing the stepwise process of introducing food insecurity screening to a single team on a single hospital unit, making process improvements, and ultimately gaining institutional approval for scaling. This project was a Finalist for The Quality, Safety, and Risk Prevention Pursuit of Excellence Award at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2023.
